The article focuses on the problems of introducing the categories “small museum” and “micro-museum” into the scientific mainstream of museology. Interest in these definitions is determined by the situation in the development of modern museum space associated with the quantitative growth of museums of this type and their active involvement in communication processes (interactions with visitors, inter-museum partnerships, etc.). The article briefly analyzes the history of small museums in the 19th and 21st centuries and micromuseums in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries, identifying the main types of small museums: art museums (their number is small), memorial museums (apartment museums, summer cottages, monographic museums), one-class museums, museums of the history of everyday culture, and museums of everyday life. Based on an analysis of existing definitions, definitions of a small museum and a micromuseum are proposed. The article defines a small museum as a museum (less commonly a museum-type institution) that implements all areas of museum activity (collecting, research and fund, exhibition, educational) with limited resources (financial, human, administrative), and a micro-museum implements the same areas with extremely limited resources.
Key words: museology, museum, small museum, micro-museum, museum space, cultural space.
